What is Hosted SharePoint?

At its simplest, hosted SharePoint can be thought of as a cloud based document storage and collaboration service. However, unlike other cloud storage services such as Dropbox, SkyDrive and Google Drive, hosted SharePoint offers enterprise grade collaboration and revision control. Hosted SharePoint is usually combined with a hosted exchange service to build a fully collaborative and scalable team productivity environment.

SharePoint documents can be checked out, edited and then checked back in. Additionally, documents have their own associated comments section, so that team members can communicate at document level.

Hosted SharePoint can be accessed using a web browser, however, the real power of SharePoint is to be found in the integration of SharePoint document handling right inside Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. This integration makes working on documents stored within a hosted SharePoint environment as easy as if they were stored on a local hard drive.

Document control and policy management is extremely granular. This allows teams to set up complex document modification rules, assigning roles to specific users

For individual SharePoint users, there are benefits to be had even if they are not part of a team. Documents can be searched, even across multiple revisions. Standard templates can be stored in the cloud, and all documents stored can be accessed both online and offline.
